Information Technology

by Michael Zieglmeier

According to the Information Technology Associate of America, information technology (IT) is the “study, design, development, application, implementation, support, or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware.” Information technology uses software and electronics to store, convert, process, transmit, receive, and protect data. Information technology professionals help organizations and individuals solve problems related to persistence, processing, discovery, and rendering of data. As personal computer and network technology has become more widely used, as well as the popularization of cell phones, televisions, and technologically capable automobiles, information technology has continued to evolve to accommodate an increasingly electronic-dependent market. Organizations such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) have developed curriculum standards for degrees in Information Technology, acknowledging that the industry deserves recognition separate from Computer Science and Information Systems. Together, they make up the Special Interest Group for Information Technology Education (SIGITE).
